This information-packed workshop will help you and your employees stay abreast of the latest changes in alternators and starters. You’ll pick up valuable tips on rebuilding them that will save you time and money. Each attendee will receive a seminar manual. Saturday, November 1 APRA Thrive Electrical Clinic The Thrive Electrical Clinic, sponsored by Lester Catalog, will feature several well-known and respected industry experts that will make this an event not to be missed: • Bruce Purkey of Purkey’s Fleet Electric in Arkansas will discuss the heavy-duty side of the industry. He will talk about popular HD starters and alternators, reasons for their failures, and what large trucking companies and fleets are doing to reduce warranty work by using better testing methods and utilizing the lastest in electronic test equipment. Bruce will cover how to perform a consistent uniform test on charging/starting systems parameters and will generate printouts to eliminate guesswork, that reduces the warranty returns due to technician’s error. Attendees always comment about the wealth of information from this popular and very knowledgeable rebuilder. • Robbie Sullivan of Accumax will present the latest market situation on starter solenoids and drives. He will explain what is going on in the market and what rebuilders have to look for to insure the quality of available solenoids and drives, either the ones produced in North America or coming from overseas. Robbie’s vast knowledge in the field and his years of experience with Accurate and Ace Electric and his current involvement with producing drives and solenoids will be a great informative addition to this year’s clinic. • Mohammad Samii, APRA’s Coordinator of Electrical Training and regular GLOBAL CONNECTION Columnist, will present a seminar reviewing the subjects that have appeared in his column, Auto Electric Corner, during the past year. He will show pictorial presentations of rebuilding some newer starters and alternators that are finding their way into the rebuilding shops. This session will be helpful to hands-on rebuilders that run service bays as well as rebuilding operations that provide technical help to their installer customers. • Dennis Jacinto - A highly recognized figure in the electrical rebuilding industry, President of Lester Catalog and current Chairman of APRA’s Electrical Division, Jacinto will discuss the latest additions to Lester’s Kwikfinder system, a web-based catalog that helps rebuilders identify units for all types of light and heavy duty applications. The Thrive Electrical Clinic will end with a panel of experts discussing some of the topics covered during the day as well as entertaining any and all questions from the audience. Every company uses information and technical data to support their remanufacturing operations. When this information is not easily obtained, organizations turn to reverse engineering activities to answer critical questions. This seminar will provide an interactive learning environment focused on the process of reverse engineering as well as examples of real-world projects. This presentation will discuss the costs associated with cleaning and the methods used to calculate the true benefits to the organization. Core Trends Workshop Sunday, November 2 Opening General Session: Remanufacturing and Product Sustainability 8:15 AM - 9:50 AM | FREE for all attendees Dr. Nabil Nasr, Director of the National Center for Remanufacturing and Resource Recovery at Rochester Institute of Technology, will present his take on the importance of remanufacturers in the drive for world sustainability. Dr. Nasr’s reputation as an international presenter has earned him an interactive role with major organizations that are shaping both policy and international activity. The presentation will focus on the momentum building around environmental sustainability and the positive implications for the remanufacturing organization. The universal tenets of material reuse and multiple product lifecycles are second nature to remanufacturers, but new to many organizations. Today, progressive companies are changing the way they do business, market their products, and service their customers to enact more sustainable production and consumption. Dr. Nasr will discuss how companies have embraced this transformation and how it may continue to evolve in the near future to benefit the remanufacturing industry. Dr. Nasr will also cover topics such as the direct and indirect impact of remanufacturing on GhG emissions, the opportunities created by increased government awareness and focus on remanufacturing, the current and future impact of material and energy shortages on remanufacturing and reuse, and the opportunities for new business in clean technologies based on changes in the marketplace. How to Find & Keep Good Employees Presented by Stephanie Peters, SESCO1:00 PM - 2:00 PM | FREE for all attendees This one-hour program begins with an open discussion of the true costs and effects of turnover and poor recruiting and hiring practices. All elements and/or systems that affect an organization in its hiring and people management are discussed. To begin, participants will learn about recruiting, sourcing and screening candidates. Next, they will learn the art of behavioral-based interviewing (further explained in the Behavioral-Based Interviewing program description). Logically, the next step of instruction includes elements of background investigations to include employment, education, criminal history and other licenses and credential confirmation. As we know, finding the right person and keeping the right person are related but still very different matters. So, this workshop will address both finding and keeping the most qualified employees of your organization. Employee retention tools as well as workplace enhancements will also be discussed. Workstation Design for Lean Initiatives Presented by RIT2:15 PM - 3:30 PM | $30 in advance, $35 after October 13th Workstation design is a topic that impacts every remanufacturing operation. A company can benefit from applying industrial engineering techniques for increased productivity at any station where work is performed. This seminar will focus on proper workstation design while giving examples of common problems and ways to overcome them. Insight on why fixture use or misuse can impact productivity, quality and worker safety will also be discussed. Seminar participants will gain an understanding of what should be considered and implemented for optimal workstation layout. Culture can affect such things as the pace at which work is accomplished, how outsiders are treated, the attention paid to details, or the risks taken.
