Automotive parts remanufacturing is becoming more competitive every year.
Progressive remanufacturers are always looking for new ways to save money
through process improvements. Surface cleaning is a remanufacturing process
where companies can typically find improvement opportunities due to the ever
increasing number of new chemistries and technologies available. Once
identified, how does a company determine which options are most cost
effective for their operation? Presented by Mike Haselkorn, Research
Faculty, Golisano Institute for Sustainability, Rochester Institute of
Technology.

Opening General
Session
8:20 AM - 9:55 AM / FREE
"Great News About Remanufacturing's CO2 Footprint"
Prof. Dr. Rolf Steinhilper of the University of Bayreuth in Germany, will
discuss remanufacturing's benefits for both our ecology and the economy. Dr.
Steinhilper will report from up-to-date industrial case studies about how
remanufacturing is three time more eco-efficient than new manufacturing -
and how it generates full product quality at half price but double profits.
Examples from engine, electrical and turbocharger remanufacturing will be
used.
"The State of
Bank Lending - A Regional Banker's Perspective"
A current discussion of the economy and its impact on bank lending
to privately owned businesses. Chris Wheeler is Senior Vice President
of Texas Capital Bank, specializing in lending and cash management for
commercial middle market companies. He works and lives in Austin, Texas.
Chris has been in banking for 23 years and was previously with Bank One.
He graduated from Sam Houston State University In Huntsville, Texas and
also served in the United States Marine Corps. He is married and has four
children and is involved with The Association for Corporate Growth and the
Dell Children’s Hospital Council.
"Embracing the
Future"
Shawn Zwicker, leader of New Business
Development at Cummins, Inc. in Columbus, Indiana will speak about how
growing environmental concerns and the prospect of ever increasing fuel
costs are impacting the design and overall operation of today’s high tech
diesel engines. These factors are creating pressure to design engines that
are increasingly lighter and more compact while at the same time much more
environmentally friendly. In addition to overall engine design these same
pressure points will push the replacement of traditional components to
mechatronic components which are lighter, smaller and more energy efficient.
From a remanufacturing perspective these changes will challenge the industry
to evaluate its traditional salvage techniques. Many common techniques that
have been reliable for years may no longer be viable. The margin or excess
of material that once existed on diesel engines may no longer be available.
These facts coupled with customer preference to restore engines to 100%
original engineering specifications will pressure the industry to evolve
from a ‘remove metal’ industry to a ‘deposit metal’ industry.
Remanufacturing factories will need to be able to do this in a high volume
production manner.
As the capital requirements to migrate into these new, more advanced
remanufacturing technologies may be quite large, it is likely that current
remanufacturers will be seeking partnership arrangements. This will be to
share the capital requirements as well as the benefits of advanced
remanufacturing technologies.
Export Seminar
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm / FREE
Eduard Roytberg, Team Leader, US Foreign
Commercial Service Automotive Team will inform potential U.S. exporters on

reducing the carbon footprint through less use of virgin materials to create
products. In Green Marketing, Make It Your Business, learn how to
promote your company's green assets as a way of improving your bottom line.
Green marketing is more than good PR. It is good for business. In this
seminar you will learn why green marketing makes good financial sense and

Opportunities
for Remanufacturers
2:00 pm - 3:15 pm /
$45 early bird; $50 after 10/15/10
Remanufacturers often focus on their existing capabilities and customers
when looking for new opportunities to advance their organization. This focus
can yield excellent results, but all too often opportunities can slip by
unnoticed. This presentation will cover a variety of topics, related to the
automotive/truck parts remanufacturing industry, which will challenge the
attendees to refocus on emerging opportunities. Topics such as the momentum
building around environmental sustainability will be discussed as it relates
to material reuse, increased governmental awareness of remanufacturing, the
turmoil in the automotive industry, and current emphasis on “green economy”
jobs. Presented by Mike Haselkorn, Research Faculty, Golisano Institute for
Sustainability, Rochester Institute of Technology.

Reducing Energy Consumption
3:30 pm - 4:45 pm /
$45 early bird; $50 after 10/15/10
Remanufacturing operations typically consume a significant amount of energy
to drive various process steps. The cost associated with energy usage can
also negatively impact the bottom line and decrease competitiveness. As
companies look for cost cutting opportunities they should adopt a structured
approach to evaluating energy related improvements and understand the full
possibilities that exist. This seminar will be an overview of the various
tactics and strategies that companies have used to reduce energy related
costs. This session is also suitable for ALL people in manufacturing
operations to attend. Presented by Bob German, Senior Staff Engineer,
National Center for Remanufacturing and Resource Recovery, Rochester
Institute of Technology.
How to Transform a
Truck Diesel Engine into a LPG – Powered Engine
4:30 pm - 5:15 pm / FREE
Clemens Ortgies of BU Drive USA & Germany and Ronny Fritsche of the
University of Bayreuth in Germany will cover this new opportunity to expand
your business in to this profitable niche market. The session will cover how
to remanufacture and upgrade used truck or stationary engines into gas-
powered engines that conserve resources and are environmentally friendly.
These newly developed engines will cut purchases and operating costs by 30
percent over those of a conventional engine. This market has developed
because engine manufacturers cannot justify the investment needed to develop
special engines for such a small market.
